OpenBSD Journal

Undeadly one year old!

Contributed by mk/reverse on from the calendar dept.

Today Undeadly is one year old! Time flies, so here are some numbers of what happened during the last year:

  • 320 stories
  • 21006 moderation points
  • about 1000000 hits
  • about 100000 monthly visits

We think this is pretty good, and lots of this success is because of our readers who submit stories. Thank you, and keep it up!

Update: As a part of the birthday celebration we want feedback on the new CSS-controlled Undeadly-layout, so, please, take a look and give feedback on the poll. Many thanks to Paul Weissmann for providing the templates for the new layout!

    Great! It works very nice.

Especially the moderationsystem is very nice. I wish /. used something as simple as that.

The threading model can still be improved though. ATM everything is colapsed. I'd like it if all comments were expanded.

i think it would be better if down mods counted as 0 instead of -1. a score of 3/7 is deceptive. looks like 3 people liked it and 4 didn't, but actually 5 people liked it and 2 didn't.

how about we take a moment to figure out THE WAY IT IS and then base our future assumptions on THE WAY IT IS and stop suggesting modifications to something that is working perfectly THE WAY IT IS?

      2. By Anonymous Coward (213.208.100.201) on

What about three numbers: [good | bad | total]. "[5 | 2 | 7]" (your example) is then easy to understand.
Although, a simple fraction would be easier for those who cannot be botherd to look at the definition. And ,as i'm sure someone will point out, my scheme does not add any information at all.

        a) I agree
        b) as I post this you're moderated at 3/7, which is funny. Nobody touch it!

to daniel, grey, and everyone else at undeadly, as one of the editors at deadly, i gotta say i'm pleased with what you guys have done in the past year. jim and i made the right move for ourselves in leaving the project, and also on behalf of the openbsd journal community in entrusting it to your great hands.

well done, guys. thanks for continuing everything and serving the community.

The new layout looks simple and clean yet cold. Add at least one strong colour. All the current colours in use are not very attractive or dominating. Just my opinion.

    Take care :-)

The mortal deadly raised from death, became truly undeadly
After serving to OpenBSD community, that seems now like an eternity!

It looked like a 1 april joke last year...telling that they will stop on that date... but i am very happy OpenBSD journal is still here ! Keep up the good work !

Daniel and undeadly crew. Thank you so much for being a place to find solitude with other OpenBSD fanatics. The new undeadly looks super sweet!

Might I make a few CSS suggestions? First, padding is your friend. Add some to those grey rounded header bars - they look cramped. Second, proximity. Make the margin-bottom of the headers snuggle up to the first paragraph of the content below them, then give those headers a bigger margin-top.

I prefer the current layout to the CSS one. Mostly because I like the current look and I don't have any problems using it.

The new CSS version looks nice in full-featured browsers like Firefox, but in browsers that don't support CSS (like dillo, links+) the old one looks better.

Happy One Year - Great Save! April Fools is still a time of stress! but I'm getting over it ... couple more years should do it!

About CSS - I like it - I am concerned about rendering in Lynx - I frequently use OBSD CLI tools. A graceful unrendered display is as important as a Print CSS and Handheld CSS.

Congratulations! The CSS is acting up a bit weird on my Firefox 1.0.1. I've got a slashed box around the "reply" line, and the titles are a little small. But very nice anyways. I'd vote for it.
