Bob says: order CDs

Contributed by weerd on from the better-twice-than-not-at-all dept.

Bob Beck (beck@) wrote an important appeal to the readers of the misc@ and tech@ mailinglists, explaining that things like bigmem and other developments can be worked on and added to the tree because of the sale of CDs and OpenBSD paraphernalia.

     Hi all,

A number of you may have noticed the recent flurry of activity,
leading to stuff
like bigmem being turned on.. Some more good stuff is coming soon (my amd64
at my house is using 7 gigabyes of memory for buffer cache, and I'm doing builds
without touching disks..). Some really cool stuff is being worked on
and is coming
to a source tree near you soon.
However, I'd like to take the opportunity to remind you all, that
the project does
depend on CD and shirt sales to keep it alive. Yes you may not use a
CD all the
time, but the latest one is pretty cool.

So, short answer? go buy a CD. pre-orders are a little slow this
release, and we need
to see some more activity in that area.

Then maybe I'll stop worrying about it and commit that thing that
will make your
amd64 use even more buttloads of memory too!

So - yes we like donations, but we also like CD sales.. now is the
time to help out.

    Thanks

    -Bob

Further down in the thread Bob started, Theo explains that these days, all sales bring money to the project.

The message is clear: If you haven't done so yet, order your poster, shirt and CD set for 4.9 NOW!

I have completely stopped pre-ordering ever since the whole 'Theo VS Wim' thing. I still don't know whose side I should pick and I am probably not alone.

Withholding code for ransom is probably not a good idea either.

Totally agree, but I think the ransom was a joke.

That 'Wim-thing' was totally weird though.

It's their project, it's their time, and it's their code.

And it's his money... why give money to something you don't like?

Same for me. The fun was gone for me after that one.

Let's think everything is solved now.

We cannot lose that much, and the project needs it!

Just sounds like a lame excuse for not giving money to OpenBSD at all IMO.

While you don't need to pick sides in the "Theo vs Wim" thing, you can decide if you want to financially support OpenBSD. The past is past, but current development does need funding. If you want OpenBSD to continue, please buy a cd set.

So don't "pick a side". Just order CDs. I don't remember having to answer "So, who's side are you on?" in the order form when I ordered mine.

Well, if Wim makes you an OS you like to use, by all means pay him the money.

There are more sides to it than that. You'll notice that a lot of developers still write code for OpenBSD. That's Henning, Miod, Kettenis, Jasper, Otto, Antoine, Landry, etc.

Oh, and I still write code too.

Do you want that to continue ? We need money to keep the infrastructure alive. If we don't have cvs, we can't work, if we don't have the mirror sites (and that means Bob Beck at Edmonton, for the most part), we can't distribute the work.

If we don't have Theo to be a major pain in the ass around release time, then you can be sure that the quality of OpenBSD will slip. Very quickly.

Things are very simple. We've moved on.

Do you want OpenBSD to continue ? then keep buying CD.

It is pretty clear to me. OpenBSD receives funding from continued CD sales. Wim does not receive funding any longer from continued CD sales. OpenBSD did not receive all funding from Wim from past CD sales, and no funding from T-Shirt sales made by Wim. Further scrutiny starts to make some people squemish, but its as simple as that.

I do not see a 'side'. I see a clear cut pattern that guarantees your money now goes to OpenBSD as it was intended.

OpenBSD has never had a problem cutting off that which does not work within the
goals of the project, see the whole ipf(4) debacle for another good example.

Thank you for your continued support, your certificates of appreciation (those orders of CD's, T-Shirts, and Posters) are what keeps the ship afloat.

Done. Ordered 2 CD sets and 1 T-shirt. I was late this time, sorry.

Thanks to all the OpenBSD developers for working on the project and making it available for others to use. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.

Just to let some of you know, my pre-order was despatched from the UK store today. I should have the 3 discs of freedom in my hands by next week.
