Pre-orders are now being accepted for OpenBSD 4.8, which is scheduled for release on November 1st, 2010.
The biggest new feature in this release is the vastly improved suspend and resume support. Thanks to the hard work of certain key developers, most newer laptops (those with ACPI instead of APM) can now be suspended and subsequently brought back to life. As usual, many other improvements have been made, the plus48 page lists them all.
Please read on for Theo's announcement to misc
Subject: OpenBSD 4.8 pre-orders are up From: Theo de RaadtTo: misc@cvs.openbsd.org Date: 2010-09-08 19:52:27 OpenBSD 4.8 can now be pre-ordered. The release date will be Nov 1. As usual, the CDs will ship a bit before the official release. http://www.openbsd.org/48.html Some of the webpage content does not yet show what is coming in 4.8. Please be patient with us as we try to add those details. (Many of you already know the real shining achievement for the release is suspend-resume for ACPI-based laptops, but there are many other things). Pre-orders are up at the North American order site, as well as the European site: http://www.openbsd.org/orders.html or directly to: https://https.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/order http://www.openbsdeurope.com/ This release has no tshirt. The main reason is that the release artwork didn't go nicely onto a tshirt which could "stand on it's own"; we also failed to design a non-release related piece of art as an alternative. We would be very happy if people bought some of the older tshirts though! Next release, there will be a tshirt again. I am also making the song available at the same time. As usual, that page contains a taste of the release artwork. http://www.openbsd.org/lyrics.html
So download the new release song (in MP3 or OGG), play it loud, and head on over to the order page to make sure you get your set before the 1st of November.

here we are days later and there is no swarm of replies stating that the author of each has pre-ordered already.
As someone who is soundly asleep most days around the time of Theo's message (he's on -0600, I'm on +1000) I don't expect to be the first to order but I sure hope this silence does not mean that I'm the only customer.
Anyway, just to be a stirrer my order was placed on 9/9 but the reply shows that it survived its trip across the IDL and is registered as:

C'mon guys, stir up your friends and clients to support the cause!

Just braggin' but I'm 2010/9/8-13:57:41-16541. What's an hour and a bit amongst friends.
Just by coincidence, I was reading CVS commit mail and saw the message modifying the web page. I went to the site and there it was. In the time it took to enter and submit my information, Theo's announcement to misc came in. While reading it, my confirmation arrived.
I don't know if I'm first or not, but his is way cooler than being first poster on /. ;-) I don't spend enough time there to have even been close to first there.
I hope millions follow me. I make my clients buy CDs since there are no license fees, I think they need to pay something. This time I decided to get one for myself.

btw, I like the guitar in the release song. Who needs words when it can be expressed through guitar :)

I'll be plugging OpenBSD on Software Freedom Day ... just to remind people that there's more to life than Linux/Ubuntu!
Thanks to the developers for another release.

> Sad there is no more commentary to the song since many release. I used to read them to know what happens the last 6 months in the open source world, and to check who where the traitors :P
Without lyrics it's hard to tell. Zero appears to be a masked hero who has defeated a greedy landowner. But Zero himself is not so good -- he's got the peasants in forced labour, picking laptops for him which he then sells. This might be a reference to OpenSolaris: Oracle/Sun (see the setting sun in the background of the second frame) tries to become the darling of the open-source world by opening up Solaris -- but with significant proprietary bits and an odd license. Improvements from the community are incorporated into commercial versions of Solaris, but not so much the other way around.
El Puffiachi, meanwhile, plays his guitar as the peasants are incited to rise up against Zero. In the final frame El Puffiachi is revealed to be a great fighter himself, and shows everyone what a real Open operating system is before moving on to the next town. Meanwhile in our world, OpenSolaris is pretty much dead, while OpenBSD is still here...
Of course, this could be entirely wrong. I need CD art and stickers to verify :-)
Order 2010/9/9-7:21:50-16435, BTW...

Of course.
We don't have a single CAD outstanding. Austin ships and the full balance is paid straight away.

I meant to say CD not DVD, clumsy old me.
OpenBSD was the first *nix system I used and after trying a ton of different linux, os x and other BSDs I feel so at home using OBSD. I like it for its philosophy and also how easy it is to use - even for a simple luser like myself. Reading the super awesome man pages is often all I need to figure something out. That's a testament to the quality of the man pages; not my level of comprehension ;)
I buy the cd set feeling happy and proud.
