Call For Donations: oga needs a laptop

Contributed by merdely on from the a-friend-in-need dept.

Update by oga@ (May 20 2008, 12:15:00 BST): The goal was reached in just over 2.5 hours. Man, that was fast! I'd like to give a huge vote of thanks to everyone who donated (I'll get around to thanking you personally over the next few days). An extra special thanks should also go to Marc Balmer (mbalmer@) for organising this effort. The new laptop will be ordered as soon as the insurance cheque clears.

Again, thanks for making a replacement laptop a possibility.

As Marc Balmer (mbalmer@) posted on misc@ today, Owain Ainsworth (oga@) needs a replacement laptop:

Dear OpenBSD Users

A short while ago, Owain Ainsworth's (oga@) laptop was stolen. As you all know, oga@ is working on DRI/DRM and on X11 (xenocara) together with Matthieu Herrb.

Marc's email continues below.

With the general hackathon in Edmonton just ante portas, this brings oga in the very uncomfortable position to have no laptop to hack on. But oga's work is crucial for the X11 support on OpenBSD.

His laptop was insured, but the insurance will only cover 1000 british pounds whereas a replacement will cost 1700 british pounds. We are short of 700 pounds. oga knows exactly what model of laptop he needs, these figures are accurate. Being a PhD student, he needs the community's help.

If you think you can step in and help oga and the project, then please contact me off-list. We can accept donations by wire, Visacard and Mastercard (creditcard fees are covered by my company).

I started myself by tossing in CHF 200 (approx $ 200).

(And any excess money would go as a donation to OpenBSD, btw.)

Please help Owain (and OpenBSD) out. Contact Marc ( to arrange your donation.

Excellent initiative, Marc, thanks for picking this up. I'll happily join you with a donation. I've been running oga's patches for DRM/DRI support and think that this will pave the way for even better X on OpenBSD in the future, so it is important that we all donate.

Especially with the hackathon around the corner, any leftovers will be put to good use, I'm certain.

    Thanks again !

    DRI patches? What's this? Interesting!

I'll see if I can convince my boss to make a donation :)

In case anyone is wondering about the exchange rate between British pounds and American or Canadian dollars, one pound is approximately two dollars. So, oga needs about 1400 dollars. (After Marc's 200-dollar donation, he only needs 1200 dollars.)

To get things rolling, I've donated 40 EUR.
