IPv6 ready Apache needs extensive testing

Contributed by merdely on from the httpdv6 dept.

Lawrence Teo lets us know that:

Marc Balmer (mbalmer@) posted a patchset on ports@ that makes httpd IPv6 capable. This patchset needs extensive testing on both IPv6 environments as well as IPv4 ones. It should ideally be tested in real-world production environments with complex Apache setups and lots of modules.

And as Stuart Henderson (sthen@) points out on ports@:

Part of this is to test IPv6 operation if you have connectivity (some other areas not directly related to httpd come to mind; web- based applications, log analyzers and so on may require changes).

We also need to find out whether there's any negative effect on normal IPv4 operations. So, users without IPv6 connectivity can still help with this, the most important part of testing.

Unfortunately, I don't even run a webserver, so I cannot really compare before and afters of server performance.

I'm in the same boat here. I use OpenBSD as a desktop machine and so I could test this but I'm really not the right person to give feedback.

Since I switched to lighttpd, I don't see any reason to switch back to Apache 1.3, moreover lighttpd has perfect IPv6 support for a long time.

Yeah, and most other webserver in the ports tree support IPv6 as well, nostromo and Apache2 come to my mind.

Making the in base IPv6 ready is a logical step for me. And not to be misunderstood by people like you as a call to come back to Apache ;-)

I have put online a document describing the new command line options and the changes to the configuration file at the following URL:

    http://mini.vnode.ch/manual/ipv6.html

This is work in progress. Comments, corrections, and extensions (via email) welcome.

Today I found a problem with the proxy module: it was not possible to use httpd as a reverse proxy using the rewrite and proxy module.

That has been fixed and works now.
