OpenBSD 4.2 pre-orders arriving in Canada!

Contributed by sean on from the neither rain, sleet, snow nor release date will stop puffy dept.

This morning I got a nice parcel from Canada Post with my order of 4.2 discs! The stickers are different, and the booklet story is quite amusing with the release theme being "Secure, Open and Free Marathon." As was in the last release the new DVD cases arrived in impeccable shape (ie. no busted disks or cases). One notable difference is that disc 3 only boots SPARC64 (instead of both SPARC and SPARC64 as in past releases).

Yet another fantastic release! Make sure to order yours now. (Order from Europe)

More images after the jump.

Here is a nice overview shot of the case and it's contents.
The coffee is for scale and also an early morning pick-me-up!

Here is a shot of the booklet cover and the stickers. The stickers feel very different than last release but a nice giant puffy sticker is always well worth the price alone.

And finally (for completeness sake) a shot of the case inside and out. If you want to see what is in the booklet and enjoy the cartoon story then I suggest you grab a copy (Order from Europe) for yourself.

Thanks to dwc for hosting the images.

Absolutely! Mail hasn't been reliable for some time and there's also the disruption either side of the strike.

      Must... be... patient...

      Cheers,
      Alex.

Yes, have a look at events.html, We'll be at Systems 2007 with an OpenBSD and OpenSSH booth. You can also join us next week at the free event T-DOSE in Eindhoven.

There are some more small events coming up like Essen and such but those I'll add when the pressure drops here and I get a decend night of sleep ;-)

Wel, some of you will get the package on Monday, others will have to wait until Monday for their package to be shipped out. I had to drive to UPS Brussels yesterday noon, get the 19 packages from a container, bitch to the operational manager because they had caused damage in transit (no news here).

In the afternoon 114 orders were packaged and I was able to drop them off at the transport depot in Brussels around 21h15. It's all nice when a plan falls apart ;-)

Because you asked I took a quick listen and it's 'soft-rock like' feels like an 80's movie track. But I'm probably way off. Not my kind of music but it is there on disc 2.

The song is superfluous, but often quite amusing all the same.

I tend not to listen to them, but read the lyrics online.

I'm coming in at the end of the month (mostly for Museum Night, and to upgrade a couple of servers), spending a week working in Amsterdam, a couple of days in The Hague, and then I have a week off :)

I still don't have a OpenBSD shirt because every option to buy one seems to involve a credit card. I do have a wireframe puffy sticker on the back of my PowerBook.

Right now my itinerary is USA -> Amsterdam -> The Hague -> Haarlem -> Amsterdam -> Copenhagen -> USA, but there's some flexibility in there, particularly if a brewery tour is involved.

Actually you can just order a Tshirt with an IBAN wire transfer from the webform (just select Prearranged as payment) or pick up a Tshirt at the many events we are at.

ROFL at the blinged up Sun fish and the very fat Windows fish. And is that OSX fish listening to an iPod and feeling sad and weak? Because she's been left behind in security features even by Windows fish?

Beastie looks determined, but Tux looks smug before the race has even started. He's got a look reminiscient of Hare in his eyes.

But Puffy... is relaxed. Like any really confident, proven athlete should be before a marathon. He's got nothing to worry about, since he runs marathons for a living and knows that this marathon should not actually end and he won't be eaten by Orca.

I placed my order for two CD sets and a T shirt about thirty-five minutes after pre-ordering opened but being in Australia, I can count on the postal services and customs to delay them.

So go on, boast about how you have it running already. You lucky @#$%!

But maybe you can help. If anybody has it running on a Soekris 4801 or a Thinkpad R50 or T60 and can send me an email with the dmesg it would let me compare with 4.1 installs to see if I can see any critical change.

dmesg.w.wtw@xoxy.net will happily accept your mail.

        You think so?
Sydney is not the antipodes for Calgary but it is lots further than Rio.

        YYC-GIG 10700 km
        YYC-SYD 13169 km
        Great circle distances.
23% further and it would be worse if I lived in Perth.

Of course if you live in Porte Alegre it would be a bit further, 10886 km ;-)

And for the other members of the Pedants Union: Yes I know the CDs ship from Milk River but that doesn't appear on my IATA Airport code list so the calculator can't handle it.

Anyway I hope you get a pleasant surprise and see yours very soon.

    50USD are like ~35.43EUR
    50EUR are like ~70,56USD

    Europeans seriously pay too much...
And NO it can't get explained with the shipping from Canada to Europe because this gets paid in USD too (like oil too..so even shipping got cheaper).

The problem with the price difference rises during the weak USD (and I like the weak USD a lot but the prices needs to acclimate to this situation!)

This question is asked each time a new OpenBSD release is announced and, again, each time the operating system media starts arriving to customers. You are comparing EUR 35.43 to $70.56 USD and both are not the same currency. You know that two different units cannot be compared, right?

On the other hand, there are very good reasons for this price (and it is *not* a high price). Just search this question on OpenBSD Journal to see that not only shipping from Canada is included in the European price, but also VAT.

You don't order in the US. You order in Canada. The prices on the website are listed in $US because for many people this is a familiar currency to convert to (heck, does anybody know what the $CAD is worth without looking it up?)

Unfortunatly all the transactions are then translated in $CAD and this is where the project is loosing a lot of money now. So if you think you are getting a good deal, you are actually costing the project money.

I think the prices should be fixed in $CAD and the $US on the website should fluctuate with the exchange rate... the OpenBSD project is a Canadian based project, not a US based one and I don't see why we should be ashamed of that.

Yeah, $1.005 ± 0.005. Of course, the fact that the CAD is greater than the USD for the first time in 31 years is all over the news in the two northernmost countries on this continent, so that might explain why no one here has to look it up...

You buy the CD set to support the project, don't you? Well, then be assured that 50 EUR today helps (a lot) more than 50 EUR some years ago.

      Seriously, where is the problem?

      > The problem with the price difference rises during the weak USD

Consider also that the project is based in Canada and that some hackathons occur in Canada as well so a significant portion of the expenses are spent in Canada in Canadian dollars.

Back in 2002, $50 USD paid about $80 CAD expenses in Canada.

Today $50 USD only covers about $49 CAD expenses.

Either the USD price needs to go up or more CDs need to be sold to cover the same expenses.

Europeans pays as much as they always did. It's not because the $US fluctuates that the value to us changes. It has always been EUR 45 for the old CDset and EUR 50 for the DVD case one. This includes the 21% VAT as wel.

      > And NO it can't get explained with the shipping from Canada to Europe because this gets paid in USD too (like oil too..so even shipping got cheaper).

What a load of bull. I pay my UPS invoices in EUR. You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.

      > The problem with the price difference rises during the weak USD (and I like the weak USD a lot but the prices needs to acclimate to this situation!)

Wel, I'm fed up with this crap keep coming back so I propose we change the CD price to $CAD, which is the currency we buy the CDs from and the currency we spend the most money (like expenses and hackathons). The 20% swing in the $US in the last month has seriously affected the income of the project where Austin is considering switching the prices on the website to $CAD.

Guys, it's very simple. Even if you are based in Germany, you are free to order your CDs from Canada in $US. But by doing so, you'll have higher shipping costs, it will take longer for delivery and the project gets less revenue.

It would make a lot of sense to have the price of CDs in the same currency as the major part of the expenses. At least that would provide some stability when budgeting things like the hackathons. With the CDs sold in USD, if you think of how many CDs need to be sold to pay for a hackathon, the hackathons just got even more expensive. Yesterday was the biggest one-day gain for the Canadian dollar as compared to the US dollar.

Well I'm happy to be able to buy in Euros. I don't have to go looking up exchange rates to work out what it is in Sterling, which according to my bank statement is thirty-something pounds.

Or another way, the price is about the same as 10 pints of generic, uninteresting and fizzy lager (Carl{ing|sberg}) in the pub!
Maybe this says more about the sorry price of alcohol where I live in the UK and my taste in beer than anything else but the people who make OBSD are a talented bunch... You can compare the checksums for the install kernels and install sets against the official FTP.

It'd be nice if the RMD160 hashes for the official master disk and install sets were posted somewhere with a digital signature, but that's an old and dead argument.

The official CD-ROM and ftp are different sources for the install kernels and sets. I think that anyone can reasonably trust on these sets if the checksums match. On the other hand, a change in one of the sets will be noticed very soon.

The way you reply does not mean you are right, it only means you are incredibly ill-mannered.

Cabal has some doubts about the trust we can have in the OS media; however Kevin is right because the kernel and installation sets in the CD-ROMs and ftp come from different places. Any change in the operating system media will be noticed as soon as the CD-ROMs arrive to the customers. Period.

If someone is able to change the sets that are committed to the anonymous ftp server *and* to the manufacturer of the OS media, what will stop him from changing the sets before they are digitally signed?

Both MD5 and checksums are strong functions from the point of view of the output space distribution; so they are relatively secure. It is difficult for two different sets to return the same digest. If someone has doubts about the integrity of a set, he can check the set using the digests on the anonymous ftp. There is no need to use additional algorithms even if these algorithms seem stronger. Is it so difficult understanding that when someone has doubts about a set/digest pair he must get the sets and digests from different sources? Is it so difficult understanding that it is nearly impossible to change a set in a way that it matches the original MD5 *and* checksum?

if you get an official CD from the project, only the project really needs to check what they sent matches what they get back from the manufacturer.

If you do not trust the project to ship you an official disk you really are paranoid, in which case the best thing to do is download the source, audit it, and build it yourself ( and make a donation of course. )
