On the other hand, I would like to see more non-ports stories. Partially my fault, as I havn't submitted any.

Rather than stop posting them or posting less, why not maybe create a ports.undeadly.org with a link on main page or something and maybe a blogs.undeadly.org - or something like that? Just a thought... Might be a dumb idea to some, but we can't possibly make everyone happy.
In short, I think it's great knowing what's newly added to the ports tree (I for one don't follow misc@) and rarely do I check the ports tree for any new additions.
Hope to see more OpenBSD related news and anything good floating around the mailing lists.

why not? undeadly is very low volume anyway; anybody that's not interested in ports stories can skip them.

Absolutely. Look to pkgsrc.se for inspiration, I really like their method of cataloging everything in pkgsrc and reporting upgrades, additions, and removals. Having a section like this on Undeadly would be great!

Agreed with all of this, and what phessler has said at the beginning.
Please, don't let a few whiners ruin it for everyone else.
I love the port updates, and like these guys, I'm not always up to date on the latest softare that may help me do my job easier, and this has been a great place to find out. I would have had no idea about prelude (and am now checking it out at home) if it were not for the post on undeadly.

Whether or not the ports-postings remain on the main page is immaterial. But I would definitely miss them if they were relegated to little more than a "new-arrivals" list without the comments.
I don't care *which* ports are new. I like reading about how they are put to use by the active OpenBSD community, or how our port differs from the main development focus of that project.
Even with the added "volume" of all these allegedly superfluous ports postings, undeadly is hardly at risk of getting lost in all the noise.
Cheers,
/Jason
> Yes, please keep posting them. I read ports@, but I'm a fist dragging luddite at times. The ports stuff has pointed me at applications that I wouldn't normally give a second glance at. Besides, it's not like there at 100s of stories to plow through daily on here. It's worth the bandwidth.

But the developer blogs are an interesting addition to the usual undeadly news, so I'd like to see them still coming (as and when the developers feel like it, obviously.)

The stories I like are:
dev blogs
podcast interviews with devs and related people - text is ok, but i get a better feel for the person and how excited they are about their topic this way
reports from any openbsd events
state of the union from theo which are really from lists.
contribution news since it might provide more publicity leading to even more contributions
ports - preferably more significant ones, but who is to judge
I would love to see an occassional summarization of the significance of recently completed work, not just at the time of release but more ongoing. We hear about the big things especially at release time as a marketing tool, but hearing general progress on a scale above the individual driver seems like it would lend excitement.
The occassional article that would recommend certain aspects of technology within openbsd would be huge. Just pulling examples off the top of my head
- advancement of wireless in openbsd along with mentioning say software one would use to build his own AP with current openbsd tools and issues like should the firewall on the AP be the main firewall for the house
- how people have their systems set up for efficiently working with openbsd as a dev or a porter
- how someone has his xyz type biz set up on openbsd - slice of life
Not man pages. Not how tos that aren't going to be maintained. Just articles about how people really use openbsd. Just snippets. I think that's always the fascination people have with other people's desktops. People basically want to know how other people work and live with a piece of technology.
