BSD Village - Chaos Communication Camp 2007

Contributed by merdely on from the for-five-days-in-berlin dept.

The BSD users that brought you "such mishaps and hangovers like HAL 2001, FOSDEM, CCC SummerCamp 2003 and What The Hack 2005" would like to announce the OpenBSD presence during CCC Summercamp 2007: Wednesday, August 8 through Sunday, August 12, 2007.

There will be a big tent for hacking and a smaller tent for sleeping (like What the Hack). The cost for the tents and other accommodations through the CCC is fixed so Wim is trying to balance keeping the cost down and the crowd manageable. He's shooting for 70 campers to meet that balance.

We'll be providing a roof over the head for any OpenBSD user or developer interested spending [5] days in a field near Berlin. You don't need to bring your own tent or camping bed, those are things we can provide for. Just bring your laptop and sunscreen!

To participate in a cool social event where you get to meet and hang out with lots of cool people from all over the world, please register using the web form. Email wim (a) kd85 com.

This is highly recommendable, way better than setting up your own tent and it saves you some weight in baggage. I was at WTH2005 in the OpenBSD village and it was really cool. At first I was afraid someone might go through my stuff while I was away, but everyone was really very nice and friendly. I even left my brandnew OpenBSD parka hanging in the tent, no problems whatsoever. I'm afraid I won't be attending CCC though, due to budgetary constraints.

An advice for the sleeping tent: create a floorplan for the beds and walkways. It was kind of crowded and sometimes a bit tricky to silently maneuver through the sleeping slackers. Especially when you've had a few 'Gulden Draak' beers (also highly recommendable!).
Be warned that GD may induce I/O errors, buffer overflows and core dumps when consumed in large quantities. But that's what you're all there for anyway :-)

I also attended WTH2005 and lived in the OpenBSD-tent. It's highly recommended because you don't need to bring your own tent and you get plenty of space to sit and hang out at.

I probobly wont at attend CCC due to not be able to take time of from work which sucks. And stay away from the while gold (aka Golden Draak), it can make you do dangerous things!

bring earplugs (the best you can get)
there's at LEAST one (e.g. me after some guldendraak) snoring - or
if you go to "bed" quite in the morning, there'll be music, talk, ..
      around the tent.

SHUT UP in the sleeping tent. btw. :-)

Yes, you will have to deal with a lot of noise.

For instance, the first night at WTH I woke up in the middle of the night because pb was running around in the tent, bashing at the sides because he couldn't find the exit. (-:

        Also, you better love circus.

Haha. Well it's all about how much you drink yourself. I slept like a baby all nights in the tent =) Never slept so good in a tent before I think =)

Have a look at the wiki, there is bunch of other Belgium people in the Iguana tent and the Belgian embassy tent.

My car unfortunatly will be packed and I'm leaving 5 days before the event, for setting up things.

There is someone with a car and two empty seats on the bxlug mailing list. French-speaking but I guess it's not really a problem :)
