OpenBSD in the Jungle

Contributed by deanna on from the it takes a laptop dept.

Philip Munts writes:

I recently spent two weeks using OpenBSD in a jungle village in Guatemala. I came with a group of 52 to help finish building a new Church of the Nazarene in La Esperanza Chilatz, few miles outside of Coban. We also planned to operate medical and dental clinics, and teach a number of workshops on various topics ranging from small engine repair to puppetry. I didn't have any specific assignment before our arrival, other than to help our group leader with projection equipment.

Read more about how one guy's ingenuity and old Thinkpad running OpenBSD helped make the operation a success.

Sounds like a resourceful lad. And let's face it, most geeks fantasize about a trip like that...

Hmm... I think I'd rather go back down to Jamaica... I didn't need computers, lights or motor cars. Good people, fresh food and cute women.

But if I had to do a working holiday I think I could have fun doing such a thing. =-)

I sure do. Actually, I just got back from Peru demonstrating GNU/Linux and LTSP to someone who's about to set up an Internet cafe down there. After I got his attention with my GNU/Linux laptop, I mentioned OpenBSD to him for the firewall. I explained what I was doing with spamd (he knows all about spam) and how he could have his own nearly spam-free email server on the cheap as well, all nice and legal-like. He seemed quite receptive to this, and it may actually come to pass.

This wasn't in the jungle, but it was way up in the Andes mountains, so hopefully it qualifies as a "dream" geek trip. :-)

I got a noname card on eBay that works fine:

My informal performance testing indicates USB 2.0 disk I/O just as fast as on a 1.7 GHz Windows machine.

Agreed. I'm always interested in things to make my life as a photographer easier.
