I loved this section of the interview:

CDS> What are your thoughts on both NetBSD and FreeBSD's new logos?

Theo> I really like how they make absolutely no statement at all.

I just want to say that I totally agree with that. I believe the symbol of a project should hold some type of signifigance. The symbol is going to be associated with your project; what does the symbol convey?

Sure they do, NetBSD's conveys that they have pride of some kind, though not what it is over and FreeBSD's that they like the look of Aqua and other glassy user interfaces.

Every day is a flag day for NetBSD. Now let the tree break.

Yeah, it's not on the website right now, but it's at Wikipedia, a glass ball with warps to it, vaguely alluding to the daemon.

That's all fair and well, but when will OpenBSD's logo be stepping out of the 80's? We're trying to sell this and get something back from corporations, remember.

        Hi,

I was on the CeBIT and talked to OpenBSD customers, everybody loved puffy, the young ladies, the nerds, the business people.

I'm happy to have Ty doing all this Puffy-things.

        Yours,

        Wilhelm

My wireframe puffy shirts have elicited compliments from several attractive young women, including a booth bunny at Linux World. Chicks dig OpenBSD!

I can't see how puffy is so 1980s at all. Perhaps I am missing something, has Puffy been wearing a pastel polo shirt and watching Miami Vice episodes? Puffy seems to be timeless symbol of security and protection:)

What do you mean 80s ?

        This ?

        or this ?

C'mon, the logo is not good. And stop with the musics already! No one gives a crap and I don't care if the nerds like it!

The OS excels in another areas and should look for a professional look. I also noticed the bias on this website. If anyone talks less good (not to say bad) about any thing OpenBSD related gets modded down.

All and all, and the current state of affairs shows us that OpenBSD should look for a better presentation and start maturing at another levels. I'm pretty sure Theo and the others are the best programmers for the job, but for marketing and generating "momentum" and money are not so good. Look for professionals in this areas. The project would win for sure. No one can be good at everything. Look at Microsoft. Their OS is what we know, but they have a pretty good "comercial" department. I don't want that for OpenBSD, to be some Microsoft Corp. clone, but I want this project to become all it can be!

Also, the idea that if OpenBSD seeks sponsors or partnerships the system will become a slave of them... that's just bullshit. There is more than one way to get things done. Just sit down, set goals and boundaries. Everyone in the real world does that!

You seem to be under the false impression that anybody gives a shit or that there is some kind of competition. When you say "this OS could win" win ... what?

In my humble opinion everything in life is about competing. OpenBSD is known to be one of the most secure OSes. We all agree on that. Well... check again, that was competition!

When I spoke about winning was not some horse race against any linux distro or windows! I'm to old and tired of the same bull* to enter stupid and immature flame wars. What I meant is that the OS must be competitive! I'm pretty sure you will agree on that. If not, I'm pretty sure all of us professionals will take our business some where else. As plain as simple.

In the big picture I tried to "draw" is that OpenBSD must, and I repeat must, mature in another areas. It already excels in his main purpose, but to grow even further, some other steps must be taken and look for professionals or cooperations with third parties (companies, individuals, whatever) that are also the best at what they do. Look at the current funding problem. That is compromising the real growth of the project.

I'm not trying to bad mouth OpenBSD, just trying to help by putting some ideas on the table.

I'd like to buy an OpenBSD CD without the comical blowfish and kiddie stickers but rather something like a black background with OpenBSD 4.0 in large bold letters where the O has blowfish spikes.

Since 4.0 comes out in 6 months, maybe you can ask a bit farther down the line?

May not be a good one, but at least things are moving forward. Think about that.

The language behind the little daemon in the old logo is exactly the same behind the current OpenBSD logo. Cartoonish!

"This is very exciting -- for instance, one of them will put all developers who work on IPSEC in one place for a week. Just imagine what will happen."

If it's anything like what came out of the OpenSSH one, I can hardly wait.

This is what OpenBSD is about community and constant work, never sculpted, because things constantly flow.

wonderful, the installer is broken, apparently beyond repair.. but they have a new logo!!

Way to go FreeBSD. Once again smashing my hopes and expectations.
