Call for Testers: Ports and Packages

Contributed by robert on from the test-or-die dept.

In order to make the coming 3.9 release the best yet, porters are calling for users to test the latest snapshot packages and the ports tree itself.
Make sure you report every problem you encounter.

Thank you.

I've only been using the 3.9-beta snap for a few days, but the ports seem a lot more stable. I guess a lot of off-by-ones exposed by the 3.8 changes have been found and fixed.

Are there any ports and packages that they are more or less interested in having checked, or is this just "ports and packages in general"?

Please focus on testing as many binary packages from snapshots as possible. Reports on breakage in the ports tree at this time of the release cycle are usually redundant as bulk builds are being performed frequently across all arches.

Up until when will that sort of testing be usefull ?
I mean, can this wait until the next week-end or will the tree be frozen very soon ?

After upgrading to the 3.9 snapshot [2006-02-05] my D-Link DWL-G650 (rev. B1 )wireless PC card is no longer detected as an AR5212 chipset, but AR5213... hopefully this means that it will start working now! (Keeping fingers crossed)

The wireless NIC isn't working any better for me - but all the snapshot packages I've installed so far are working great.

It seems like Reyk Floeter has lost interest or maybe he's only busy

The problem is that the HAL is not fully reverse-engineered and the amount of time it would take to fix the current problems is far beyond what anyone wants to spend.

permit me for being uneducated, but i've trolled the ftp sites and cannot seem to find the dated snapshot. i'm a happy openbsd user, but by no means someone who knows the internals very well, and would still like to help out squashing any bugs. could someone post a url/path to the snapshot file?

    thanks

Usually a month before release; visit the mailing list archives.

Its a pity it doesn't say /how/ or /where/ to report broken ports. Should one assume just straight back to the list? (RRDtool requiring X11 in the snapshots is my current gripe)

      You should e-mail the maintainer and/or ports@.

    2. By Anonymous Coward (66.11.66.41) on

RRDtool requiring X isn't considered a bug. They won't accept a port of fontconfig 2 because its included with X. So instead of just being able to install a fontconfig pkg, you have to install X.

snapshot a week ago worked fine, but because src and ports for current are still diverging, frequently the make build && make install will fail So when you ask to test, you mean what you said, test the snapshot only not a build off src/ports

Only one snapshot package build since 2nd Jan '06 and that was three weeks ago. Anyone know when the next build will get done?

Some of you seem to think it is crucial to test a very very recent snapshot. Not so. What we need is for you to test stuff you use, and report new issues, in as many useful details as you can. In case you don't realize it, there are enough ports that not everything changes rapidly. Some ports haven't seen any change in months. And if you stumble onto a bug, it's likely to still be there.
