Source Wars - Return of the Puffy: What's New in OpenBSD 4.4 - ONLamp.com

Contributed by johan on from the these-are-not-the-blobs-you-are-looking-for dept.

Federico Biancuzzi once again had interviews with a number of OpenBSD developers for the upcoming release.

Here is a short excerpt from the article:

Crypto support for softraid? Please tell us everything about it!

Marco Peereboom: The crypto softraid discipline was written by Hans-Joerg Hoexer after Damien Miller added AES-XTS (tweakable block cypher geared towards disk encryption) support. During the general hackathon we were able to sit next to each other so that Damien Miller could answer AES-XTS specific questions and I could answer softraid specific questions. This enabled Hans-Joerg to make very rapid progress and he was able to get the code enabled albeit still experimental. The reason for it being marked that way is because we still lack the tools to manage the crypto discipline properly (think changing passwords, boot support etc). It has been put through its paces by quite a few folks and it seems to work just fine. More testing is obviously always welcome.

Read the article to find out more about the changes between 4.3 and 4.4, including: a higher precision math library, NFS changes, PF state logic changes, updates to the sensors framework, and more!

For those of you who haven't already ordered your CD set, do so right away (International, Europe)!

I completely agree with this comment, there can't be a new a release without Biancuzzi's interview to OpenBSD developers :)

unfortunately for all those running encrypted VND(s) over the top of RAIDFRAME in RAID-1 mode,
softraid allows ONLY for a MIRRORed device OR an encrypted volume but NOT an encrypted RAID-1 array(with all of it being handled by softraid) ie all of it at the same time.

      sigh
      anon
ps RAID-1 for an encrypted volume is REALLY nice to have

Stackable? then I withdraw my my ill chosen words if correct :)

Will I be using softraid? as soon as I can freaking migrate after it passes internal testing, cant wait to say good bye to Raidframe.

Kudos to the OpenBSD Development crew..
4.4 looks like yet another winner and yes I buy a copy of every release to support the development

A lot of the features discussed are not available in 4.4 which is quite disappointing.

      Sigh.

Either we do not talk about work-in-progress and get complaints or now this.

Some projects are big and take more than a release period to finish. Better be happy with what you do get now and help us making the next release even better.
