Pre-Orders Available for OpenBSD 4.1

Contributed by dwc on from the FIFO dept.

You can now place your pre-orders for OpenBSD 4.1 CDs & Posters!

This is another great release, with CDs bootable on 5 architectures. Many, many new things including: the new landisk platform; improved UltraSparc III support in the sparc64 platform; scads of new devices supported; new tools like pkg-config, hoststated, new ripd, bgplg, bgplgsh; new functionality in existing utilities such as spamd, and much more.

You also get OpenBGPD 4.1, OpenOSPFD 4.1, OpenNTPD 4.1.

This release's theme is "Puffy Baba & the 40 Vendors" and features all new, original artwork and music, featured in the ultra-cool DVD case, instruction booklet, stickers, and poster. As we saw with the 4.0 release, this means NO MORE BROKEN TABS!

Also in this release are the usual batch of code cleanups and improvements, and too many things to list here. See the OpenBSD 4.1 Release page for the whole scoop.

And this releases early bird is Paul from Switzerland who ordered 4.1 even before it was announced on undeadly...

    Congratulations Paul!

(Last time he was the fourth one to order, so looking closely at those cvs changelogs finally paid off ;-)

      Thanks ! ;)

I've actually been the first to order once before, a couple releases ago (3.8). Nice to see the new release shaping up to be yet another gem !

Thanks to all the hardworking devs for their work on OpenBSD and thanks, Wim and Austin, for sending us the goods. Keep it up !

Darn, I was watching the cvs too and proceed right away. Where in the list am I then. I did order even before it was on updeadly.

        Order number 2007/3/12-11:39:37-xxxxx:

I was trying to be first! (;>

I guess Paul I will need to wait for 4.2 to try to beat you to it! (;>

Just a question, will there be no T-Shirt for this release? A nice theme, it would be a shame if there was no shirt this time...

Tshirt art is a bit delayed because we want to get it right. And of course to avoid any confusion, we prefer to have the full art up before you place your order, you don't want buy a blob in a bag, right? ;-)

I'm sure there will be a post to undeadly once the Tshirt orders are up.

If you place a Tshirt order in Europe, put your CD order confirmation order code (the thing that says 2007/03/12-11:23:10-28134) in additional comments and I'll try and batch up both order to save on shipping and make sure you get both at the same time.

Offer limited as long as I'm not too overworked ;)

I wonder what the Arabian letters making up the border around the DVD cover mean. Theo's private ssh key? :)

If you haven't seen it yet, the poster gives us a better hint of this release's theme: http://www.openbsd.org/images/poster17.gif. "Puffy Baba & the 40 Vendors"... I like it.

No, because you are looking at OpenBSD, not <random Linux flavour> here. That said, there have been attempts to port at least OpenBGPD in the past (I don't know how successful these were), and OpenNTPD is available on quite a few Linux distros (at least Debian, last time I checked).

      if you do one :)
seriously, it really depends on wether somebody steps up and does it.
Darren used to do the ntpd portables, but was very busy with other stuff lately, thus we could not do a 4.0p1.
for the routing daemons, portable versions are much harder, since they interact with the base system way more, and beyond posix - there's no stadard way to modify the kernel routing table, to begin with.
that said, it would probably make sense to make a portable OpenBGPD version that does not talk to the kernel routing table at all - i. e. is still suitable for route servers, analysis tasks etc.
but no matter how you put it, you'll only ever get all fluff on openbsd, other platforms are unfluffy.

        Apparently, you failed English too:

        "would of" is incorrect

"would've," the contraction of the phrase "would have," is what you were looking for.

Not all OpenBSD users have English as their first language. I'm willing to bet a fair number of them speak it better than you, though.

i would guess at it being in generic but not enabled by default; it's really easy though: 'boot -c' and 'enable acpi'. when the os is installed, you can 'config -e -o /bsd.acpi /bsd', 'enable acpi' and quit, then 'echo set image bsd.acpi > /etc/boot.conf'.

As of the last snapshop I checked, acpi was enabled but the acpibtn and acpitimer functions were not (which is good, because they summarily crashed by box). I suspect this gets hardware compatibility up but may not give all the functions we've come to know as being the "acpi set".

But hey, feel free to grab a snapshot and see yourself. The code changes all the time.

Well, it does now that src is unlocked, but there haven't been many changes in the last few weeks.

You should do a xen port and support it, just like there's already a port for sparc64, i386, amd64, alpha, etc.

I placed my pre-order this morning too. Don't ask why... one of the few days I do not track cvs@, read OpenBSD journal, or look for news at http://www.openbsd.org/ and there are two of the most important announcements of the year with relation to OpenBSD!

For these that do not know if investing some money on OpenBSD is a good decision: I can only suggest buying the operating system media, some of the excellent books on this operating system and making a donation. OpenBSD is one of the best operating systems available today, a project that certainly deserve support not only from end-users but by corporations too.

On an unrelated matter: perhaps a section outlining the improvements on OpenSSH should be added to http://www.openbsd.org/41.html. I know, OpenSSH 4.6 features are described in http://www.openssh.com/txt/release-4.6. But it would be nice adding them to the OpenBSD 4.1 Release list of features too.

No need to say it: good work! Thanks!
