OpenNTPd, portable ntpd version & website.
Contributed by grey on Fri Jul 16 18:23:01 2004 (GMT)
from the making it easier for other people to use OpenBSD improvements dept.

As pointed out by gwyllion here, Darren Tucker has made a portable implementation of the new ntpd that appeared in OpenBSD. And, as has also been pointed out, there is now a website devoted to this project. Here's hoping that it proves to be as popular as the portable version of OpenSSH!

I was very pleased to see openntpd appear in the FreeBSD ports tree as net/openntpd this week. The ability to have the daemon bind to a specified interface is one of the best features of this application!

IMO the manpages need a significant addition (mod -1/41)

The manpages are listed here: In the last undeadly post about the new ntpd here: It was mentioned that if you don't specify which ntp server you want to syncronize with, the prograsm will automatically choose 8 different stratum 2 servers to sync from. This very important feature is not listed in the manpages at all and I think they should be added. Also, as a matter of curiosity, I'd like to see a blurb showing how the random 8 stratum 2 servers are chosen (a parsing of the list that Uni Deleware publishes?), and which ones you are currently configured to use. This is still a really kickass thing. thanks guys!

It does it via the new round robin.A new config directive "servers" was added. Read about it in the man page for ntpd.conf. The default ntpd.conf has a single line with servers
