Pre-orders for 5.9 are up!

Contributed by tj on from the fresh-from-the-sea dept.

OpenBSD 5.9 is shaping up to be quite a big release, and pre-orders for the CD sets have just been activated.

The number of changes since 5.8 was released is massive. Roughly 70% of the userland utilities have gotten the pledge(2) treatment, among many other improvements. When's the last time you saw another OS audit that much of its entire userland in a single six-month release cycle? A few choice ports were also adapted to use it.

Improved GPT and EFI support, enforced kernel W^X on i386, a rewritten less(1) utility, Xen domU goodness, Bay Trail and Broadwell graphics drivers and much more are all just a CD away. You should also see some network improvements, something to expect even more of in the next release.

Hit up openbsdstore.com to order your copy right now! You might even receive the goods before the official release date...

But of course, if CDs aren't your thing, you can always just make a donation to help support the project instead. The stickers are pretty sweet though.

As usual the soft-shell DVD case is bigger on the inside.

    I have donated instead.

Ordered! 60 bucks for software of this quality is a steal.

Also, my understanding is that store sales help pay Theo, while donating to the Foundation doesn't. Shouldn't those without a need for CDs but a desire to help out donate directly to Theo (via openbsd.org/donations.html) in addition to the Foundation?

Where'd you get the idea that donating to the OpenBSD Foundation doesn't help Theo?

OpenBSD Foundation Announcement (including commentary) indicates that Theo benefits, and the quoted Usenet post has him say: "Of course I endorse it. It there is a large donation being made to the project, the Foundation is the way to do it." ... "I will" ... "perhaps sometimes be benefiting from it".

Later, Bob Beck noted, "the essential answer is that - we don't take visa or do microcharging. those sorts of things are better directed by the current routes." (He didn't define "current routes", so presumably he referred to the routes mentioned earlier in the post: "via paypal, bank transfer, credit cards, or pizza delivery".)

I have no idea who you are. Your selective reading and incorrect interpretation is likely due to some agenda.

The OpenBSD Foundation does not provide me with an income. They do not help me in any way. That has been stated clearly numerous times here, in other forums, on the Foundation website, and on the OpenBSD website.

The OpenBSD Foundation funds the needs of the project and ensures continuity.

I am taking care of myself without their help.

Had you placed 1-2 simple sentences it could look like a mistake or misunderstanding... but then you decided to put some work into the deception.

I did log in before making the post, and included the URL for my personal web page. I don't know why "how well we know each other" became part of this conversation, but it's not like I've been secretive about my identity.

I have deeply objected to the most erroneous claim which accuses me of actions completely contrary to my character. I categorically deny the claim that I worked to cause deception. That is the one claim which sounds like it may be backed by actual evidence, and therefore is most prone to cause me actual harm. It also seemed like the argument that could be most easily cleared up through explanation. Therefore, I focused on this issue and reduced uncritical arguments by basically ignoring the other allegations.

Private reconciliation efforts have proven futile, resulting in continual switching of conversations back to the topic of money, further accusations, referring to a religious figure to further attack, and multi-paragraph sarcasm. With this environment, further discussion does not seem a promising route towards significant progress. After stating my plan to do so, I felt forced to offer at least this one follow-up as publicly as the baseless original accusations. This way, anyone who stumbles across this can easily see the evidence that I do care enough to at least bother pointing out the contested nature of the claims.

Selfish persons posting "I, me, myself" on the web, exclusive attention deficit disorder. So radical, so fresh, this year in new monkey flavored shrink wrap, a schmuck handful. The journal has yet again seen this, OpenBSD release is available for pre-order.

if you want any one person only to benefit, buy them a drink. leave out the interpretations.
a good day for a drink is upcoming 17th march or sysadmin appreciation day.

I have an automatic monthly donation (giving up a pizza a month to support OpenBSD), but I think I'll be ordering this set, just for the cool Time Fish stickers.

I might be alone in this, but I would buy a preloaded SLC SD-card with the latest image for the not-raspberry-pi board of your choice.

    MLC I would not buy.
