iSCSI hardware needed in Switzerland

Contributed by weerd on from the i-am-so-very-scsi dept.

Recently, Claudio Jeker (claudio@) added his request for an iSCSI-capable SAN device to want.html. This was a fairly low profile addition to want.html, so David Gwynne (dlg@) made it more obvious with an e-mail to misc@.

Please read on for David's full mail:

Subject: iSCSI NAS/SAN for claudio@

hello,

i would encourage people to consider sending donations in for this, i think it
would be an extremely good investment. claudio already has a good start on an
implementation of an iscsi initiator, but he's at the point where he needs
real gear to work and test against. given the gear i fully expect him to be
able to make progress pretty quickly, which in turn means the rest of us can
then use it. aside from the usefulness of it, i would love to see some iscsi
code done the OpenBSD Way(tm) out in the wild too.

cheers,
dlg

As David suggests, sending in donations to get Claudio a suitable device may be the fastest way to get him such a machine. But of course, if you're in a position where you could donate a complete iSCSI box, be sure to contact Claudio!

Really need a box? What about OpenSolaris virtual? There are well working iSCSI and iSNS daemons and bonus - COMSAT can export ZFS volume on FC HBA as a regular SCSI device.

Yes, really a box. The hardware to run such a server would be needed anyway. And if someone has a limited amount of time to spend hacking, they don't want to waste days building a server, learning an alien OS to put together a test environment, and then not knowing whether a problem experienced is just due to bad configuration of that environment.

And, of course, somebody who needs iSCSI initiator support on OpenBSD who already has some preferred hardware would improve chances of that hardware working well by making sure the code is developed against the same kit...

        Doesn't NetBSD have a target & initiator?

Which the initial iscsi bits were developed against at f2k9, but with, IIRC, a non-standard limitation on the size of transfers which limited the usefulness of that as a target.

At least, that's what Claudio told me, and I think he'd know.

I'm telling about this one 'alien OS' 'casue that it only needs to set flag on volume you want to export on iSCSI. One command. But OK, It is 'bout personal preference and you probably prefer other 'alien OS' best packed in the box (most HW vendors use Linux nowadays).
I can provide some small iSCSI volumes on public IP for chosen initiator IPs. Mail me, if you are interested.

I'd like to know this too. I emailed Claudio, David, and finally Stuart, but no reply. Guess my emails getting lost in the ether.

Guys, I want to give you some money!

If I don't hear back I will try donating via the orders page and hope the money goes to the right people!

      Thanks.
