[c2k8]: Call for help. Testing the tip of the iceberg.

Contributed by sean on from the cvs up -Pd && make build dept.

Just a few moments ago, Theo sent out an email requesting whomever is tracking current to redouble their efforts in light of the changes that will be coming (and have been coming in):

If you are not tracking current, now might be a fun time to start!

The content of his message is as follows.

List: openbsd-misc
Subject: Development at the hackathon
From: Theo de Raadt
Date: 2008-06-11 5:17:34

Development is really fast right now, because of the hackathon in Edmonton.

We are testing as much as we can before we commit, but as always
during these hackathon processes we really depend on our user
community -- to track our changes and help spot the occasional bug we
accidentally introduce.

We are developing really fast and hard; please help us by testing
really fast and hard too.

There are some snapshots being made, of course, but people who are
familiar with checking out their own trees can really help us by building
and running it immediately.

Ooops! The article does not include the last line of Theo's message.

The end of the message should therefore read:

"There are some snapshots being made, of course, but people who are
familiar with checking out their own trees can really help us by building
    and running it immediately."

Withe the "... and running it immediately", it makes a lot more sense.

      You are correct.
      Thanks for spotting the error.

Hmmm, I ran into an issue with amd64 release 4.3 and a particular motherboard. So I am trying current before switching back to i386 4.3 stable...

    motherboard mfr: ECS
    model: NFORCE6M-A V3.0
    CHIPSET: NVIDIA GeForce 6100/nForce 430
NEWEGG PRICE WAS CHEAP, YEA I KNOW, you get what u pay for most of the time...

Funny thing is that the release i386 install for 4.3 appears to work, but the iso for amd64 definitely fails when it interacts with the disk drive... so I used the snapshot for amd64 on June 10, 2008, and that worked. I used the current src from June 11, 2006 to make a GENERIC kernel on top of that and the resulting GENERIC pannicked on reboot... So yep, It does look like changes are happening quickly and current is so definitely not a good snapshot for a firewall at the moment..

I read under platform support for 4.3 amd64 that it supports All PCI IDE (pciide) adapters supported by the i386 platform... and nforce is listed for i386.

so it should have worked with amd64 release... but obviously something improved in the amd64 snapshot over the release...

BTW, after buying the board, I noticed ECS had some fine print, like
Note: This board supports CPU up to 95W TDP only; you can refer to AMD website to check your CPU. And yes the processor is 65w, so oka...

Strike that... I just put a temp blank pata ide drive to test release 4.3 i386 install all the way... it installed but upon reboot it panicked... so even the i386 release of 4.3 does not like this motherboard, but it got further than amd64 release 4.3 before crapping I think...

ANYwho... the snapshot is working for the moment on this motherboard, and the GENERIC.MP kernel worked from the following day SRC, so the src I grabbed was in flux I guess... SO in conclusion... current is an improvement over 4.3 release for this motherboard... for sure.

    It seems the snap ISO I am using which is from the 11th, does have a small acpi issue;

On my Dell laptop power down is not working anymore.

Here you can find my dmesg: http://forgeeks.f-sw.com/index.php?m=0004&bin=1213368723

      Okay, seems to be another issue;
halt -p is in fact doing a power down, shutdown -h now is not.
So, it seems not an acpi issue, but a shutdown issue then ;-)))
Still a new 'bug' but I fixed it by using halt now.

      Sorry for bothering.....

Read the man page of shutdown: you need to use -p with it too to power down your machine.
        And this isn't new...

It seems you are right, and I did not read the man page ;-)

The strange part is that I have used 'shutdown -h now' for months in my fvwm script and it was in fact doing a power down.
This changed with my latest install a few days ago....

Let's close this discussion, everything is working again :-)

Maybe you modified rc.shutdown in your previous install?

              Not that I know.
I do have an installation script for myself, so I can not forget things.
And for shutdown/ halt I am using visudo to give rights to the right group of users.
