Third party PortUp tool

Contributed by grey on from the a little bit after easter dept.

Bas van Oostveen writes:

Dear Undeadly readers,

Together with another student, I've been working on school project to create a port update tool for OpenBSD. We planned to announce it after it graded but since that's taking awhile and the new OpenBSD 3.7 (with package update tools) is already around the corner we decided to let you guys know about it before it's too late :)

It should be said that it is most certainly not bug free and should be used with caution.
A beta version should be up soon, but for now please use the cvs source.

What does this have to offer that our pkg_tools don't have?

Are you trying to discourage him from actually taking the initiative to code something or are you wholeheartedly asking what the difference is?

Seems like an interesting project. I say good luck to them!

How do you print a list of outdated packages installed, or just update all installed packages that are out of date?

Do pkg_tools have a working application comparable to FBSD's portupgrade?

opposed to that gross ugly broken portupgrade hack they have something that actually works, really cool inline replacement of packages, pkg_add -r

openbsd 3.6 pkg_tools can not (as far as i know) update some or all installed package automaticly. when we started writing portup we didn't know that 3.7 would feature pkg_update in pkg_tools. so with 3.7 we will all be happely using pkg_update :)

No, some fixes go into each ports -stable branch over a year period.

In 3.6 system is there a way of updating port with the changes applied to the port and labeled _3_7? As far as i understand there is no updates of ports connected with specific system version.

Security fixes and sometimes reliability fixes for ports (packages) are made on the -stable ports branch.
